Infertility

Welcome. Those who travel the road of infertility are the midst of a journey that they did not ask to be on.  It is a journey of questions, waiting, tests, heartache, and more waiting.

Many cultures, both Eastern and Western, see fertility as a sign of blessing, a sign of life, a sign of union. So, when that life never shows up, the depth of experience is vast.

Women are not the only ones who are impacted by the experience of infertility. Men also experience grief, anxiety, depression, and identity concerns when encountering infertility.

Statistics show that about 6% of women are infertile, and about 11% of women of child-bearing age have impaired fertility. Similar statistics are found in males. Those statistics mean that a lot of couples are struggling with something often felt as failure and helplessness. If you or your partner would like professional support through this uncertain, heartbreaking, or anxiety-filled time, please call Dr. Ramquist. Dr. Elizabeth Ramquist’s expertise as a clinical psychologist allows her to provide therapy specific to your needs. She respects your time and will tailor your time in therapy so that you will focus on exactly what you want, when you want it. Interventions for infertility can be as few as 4 sessions, or longer, depending on the needs of the individual.

Miscarriage

About 25% of all pregnancies end in miscarriage. That means that if you look around in a room full of women who have been pregnant, it is possible that every fourth woman has experienced this loss. However, each person experiences this loss differently. To some it is a traumatic death or a traumatic experience. For others, it is a hard loss to recover from, despite one's best efforts to return to “normal”.

If you are experiencing prolonged grief to the point where your life is being altered by the loss of a pregnancy, it is probably a good time to get some professional support on your side.

Though much attention is appropriately given to the mother who has endured this loss in her body, many men experience great grief over pregnancy loss, as well.

As humans, we can endure loss more easily when we are accompanied by people who can support us through the waves of thoughts and feelings that accompany a miscarriage. If you are needing that support, please call Dr. Ramquist. Dr. Elizabeth Ramquist specializes in grief and helping people process loss. She will provide the compassionate and safe place that you need. You do not have to bear this loss in silence. There is a place for you to be heard and to heal.

Call to schedule a free 15-minute phone consultation with Dr. Ramquist at 661-505-8414.

What do psychological services for infertility or miscarriage look like?

Dr. Elizabeth Ramquist’s approach in providing psychological services to those experiencing infertility or miscarriage is to provide a place to process one’s thoughts and feelings. She also utilizes psychotherapy as a place to help the client learn and exercise skills to fortify a healthy and meaningful life.

Dr. Ramquist first meets with the client to understand the background of the situation, how it is being played out currently, and will discuss the client’s goals for talk therapy. The average length of time for psychotherapy for infertility or pregnancy loss depends on the factors mentioned above. Dr. Ramquist works collaboratively with her clients to determine the best kinds of interventions and length of therapy. Sessions are typically 45-50 minutes long and occur once per week; however, some clients may see Dr. Ramquist more or less frequently, depending on the situation.
